CANTO 6 started 29th Apr 2016 Lecture 3
  • Canto 6 explains how the Duties of Mankind is to connect themselves to the Supreme.
  • Subsequent creation = Secondary creation
  • SB 2.10.1 - The 10 subjects of a Purana
  • Prescribed duties are posana - how things are maintained.
  • We are supposed to learn how one who did something wrong will still be protected.
  • The person doing wrong should be corrected, and also those who think that such a person cannot be corrected should be corrected.

 2nd May 2016 Lecture 1
  • At this point of the Bhagavatam we have heard about people who have done everything well.
  • Now we hear about people who do things wrong, but it is still about Krishna consciousness.
  • After this the topic of Prahlada Maharaja can be introduced - pure devotion.
  • Poshana - the Lord takes care and protects His devotees.
CHAPTER 1
Summary
  • Weakness of conditioning does not impede devotional service.
  • Mundane is self-centered. We don't mind acting piously if we can remain in the center.
  • Our happiness should be based on Krishna's happiness
  • Here it will be tested - is there any importance to prayascitta, and what is its importance.
  • Sitting and dictating is not leadership.
  • If we think prayascitta is important it means we think we are the body.
  • Sukadeva Goswami's opulence is knowledge and renunciation.
  • We take the path of trouble and then wonder, 'Why is this happening to me?'
  • Everything we want is there in the spiritual world. Gopis want nice clothes, but they are so absorbed in relationship with Krishna that they don't even notice that they don't dress properly.
  • Sarva dharman parityajya means giving up the benefit of results from karma and jnana.
  • In Krishna consciousness one does not miss out on anything, but the sense of ownership is not there.
  • Desire to do things for Krishna matures into need, which matures into prema.
  • Atonement is not a problem, but it has to be real.
  • Actual atonement is unalloyed devotional service under the guidance of a pure devotee.
  • Prana maya makes good qualities the top, not considering the soul at all.
  • Wanting other person to suffer is the mode of ignorance.
  • Yamadutas know the rules, but they do not see things from devotional side. They act on the platform of piety, mano-maya.
  • Yamadutas even come to see pious people, but they act in a nice way.
  • Ignorance is not understanding our relationship with Krishna, not knowing how to engage, not knowing what the goal is.
  • Acquiring knowledge is also purification.
  • Prayascitta does not correct our wrong mentality.
  • We still advance by mixed devotional service, it works despite us. Otherwise what is our chance?
  • Yamadutas are conscious of Krishna, but it is mixed with karma.
  • Artha, money, is one of the God's principles. It never goes away.
  • Devotees don't meet Yamadutas even in dreams.
v.1-19
  • Nivrtti path may be gradual elevation, or it may be direct.
  • One has to have weakness in the faith of bhakti to have faith in karma and jnana.
  • We have to be conscious of Krishna, but then we also have to please Krishna.
  • Generally jnana and karma yogas would be used as tools if we have the piety. But even if one has no qualifications one will gain them by performing devotional service, and then we would use them to please Krishna.
  • The inclination of the individual is seen by the body.
  • Going to Brahman and coming back is just the pravrtti side of nivrtti.
  • Bhakti is the only real nivrtti path.
  • Pure devotee's problem is only that everybody else has a problem.
  • The acaryas don't plan their problems, they just come into the material world and material world is what it is.
  • According to Manu, atonement actually creates a favorable environment for the future.
2nd May 2016 Lecture 2
  • Atonement has to be done while one is still healthy.
  • Investing sin one gets more sin, investing piety one gets more piety.
  • Taking shelter of the holy name is the only real atonement.
  • 'External punishment' for the devotees should still be service - cleaning the Dhama etc.
  • Atonement in general does not purify, but especially man-made atonements.
  • Parikshit Maharaja is fully qualified to give punishment, but still he says it is useless.
  • Real intelligence s to see how to engage the wrongdoers in devotional service.
  • Person having a problem in a particular service that they like should either find a way to do that service without aspects that create problems, or do something else for some time and then try again.
  • Many of the early devotees were not at all sophisticated in the secondary aspects of Krishna conscious lifestyle, but the primary aspect was very strong.
  • Nowadays many have traded primary for a better secondary.
  • If we drop the purity, prana-maya is all that remains.
  • Even jnanis don't care for atonement.
  • Those doing atonement and those expecting others to atone are not intelligent.
  • Unless the sinful desire is changed, neither the individual, nor the community are benefited.
  • Studying is real atonement, becoming enlightened in real knowledge. But knowledge on its own will also not purify us, it has to be connected to Krishna.
  • On the platform of jnana one does not have the problems of karma, but has bigger problems. Jnana counteracts karma, but not the desire for it.
  • To not speak of sex life means to not speak of it with inspiration.
  • Austerity means being absorbed in doing our duty.
  • Not attempting to attain pure devotional service will be unfavorable.
  • One who is really sincere on how to apply something in their life is qualified to ask questions.
  • We should make questions complete in themselves, including application.
  • Devotee may use karma and jnana as secondary elements if that is required in their duties, but devotees are not dependent on them, they are not required.
  • In just a little devotional service all sin is gone.
  • Prayascitta has nothing to do for anyone who has been connected to devotional service in the slightest way.
  • Attachment to other methods of purification is unfavorable for bhakti.
  • Mode of ignorance is popular nowadays, therefore it seems important.
2nd May 2016 Lecture 3
  • We are not worried about going to hell. We just work to serve the Lord. We are not practicing bhakti to remove sin.
  • Atonement is not because it hurts. It's meant for upliftment.
  • If we just endeavor for the order of the spiritual master, serving Krishna, sins go away automatically.
  • Krishna is so near and so far away.
  • Good qualities have to be connected to the skills, and skills have to be connected to serving Krishna.
  • Otherwise we think just skill is enough. Skills, senses and good qualities all have to be used together to serve Krishna.
  • In the modern context the importance of good qualities is not necessarily seen.
  • Bhakti yoga is more simple because it is so much more elevated.
  • One should not show others when one is in trouble, because people are not qualified.
  • Obstacles are there for devotees, but they do not bother us.
  • Actual aristocratic means following the character and culture mentioned in the shastras.
  • Exclusively by devotional service can one become purified. Purified means giving up material desires.
  • Sometimes positive is used to explain the positive, sometimes to explain the negative.
  • Nothing not connected to Krishna will purify one.
  • Karmis and jnanis do not actually want to become purified. Hard core karmis and jnanis cannot understand devotees.
  • Scriptures can be understood when approached with humility.
  • Maya is all-accommodating.
  • Even without fully realizing Krishna all sin is destroyed. That we are sinful is not a problem. Problem is not being Krishna conscious - that is the original sin.
  • Bhava has extended down in our practice.
  • Even just remembering the Lord is sufficient.
  • All sin is removed when we begin our practice, now we only have to deal with the lack of Krishna consciousness.
  • People who have come in contact with Krishna consciousness are liberated from all previous sin, though they may go on committing sins.
  • It's only because of bhakti that any material piety is happening.
  • Those doing bhakti have already done all the atonement - it is accomplished by thinking of Krishna only once.
  • Even if devotees again commit sins, they have no significant effect.
  • One can only reveal one's mind to people who are honest, or respect people who return respect.
  • Freed from fear means freed from attachment.
  • The whole material world is just meant for devotional service.
  • Even prayascitta will not have any effect without bhakti.
  • Karma is the path of difficulty.
v. 20-31
  • The story of Ajamila's falldown is just setting the scene for actual discussion.
  • Once taste for devotional service comes, there arises distaste for sinful things.
  • Vedic things give benefit whether we realize it or not.
  • People are worried about sinful activities, but nothing is done to stop illicit sex.
  • If one is properly situated in devotion early in life, there is all chance one will remember it later.
  • Ajamila was elevated to bhakti by his chanting even without him knowing it.
  • Everybody accepts Srila Sridhara Svami's verdict on the Bhagavatam.
  • Ajamila had committed bodily, verbal and metal sins, so 3 servants of Yamaraja came.
  • The word Narayana has 4 syllables, so 4 Vishnudutas came.
  • It was not pure chanting, but it was Namabhasa - without offense.
  • We think we should consider the motive why devotees are chanting, but Vishnudutas did not consider that.
  • The benefit of chanting is eternal, but the offense is temporary.
3rd May 2016 Lecture 1
  • Devotees are simply interested that we are chanting, never mind why.
  • However, making up a bogus philosophy and then being committed to it is different.
  • Devotional service is so special even in the undeveloped stage.
  • Here the glory of the holy name is brought out.
  • Chanting brought Ajamila to nishtha.
  • Even though we are purified by chanting we still act as conditioned due to attachment.
  • Vishnudutas are much more powerful than Yamadutas.
  • The Vedic Stories only give as much detail as required for that particular story.
  • Otherwise, so many stories and details are given.
v. 32-55

  • The story of Ajamila would have happened in Treta-yuga or later, since there was the system of Varnashrama.
  • Vishnudutas look so good and elevated, so the Yamadutas wonder why they are acting improperly.
  • Even devotees place themselves under the jurisdiction of Yamaraja if they act sinfully, but normally they are not punished by Yamaraja and Yamadutas.
  • Every Manvantara all the demigods from Indra down change.
  • Pious activities do not get rid of the impious - it's a hope against hope for the illusioned living entity.
  • People who do not have qualifications to do prayascitta are executed by the government, and they get the same benefit.
  • Vishnudutas were smiling because the questions from Yamadutas were interesting, so they were thinking, 'What is this nonsense they are speaking?'
  • Those who go into metaphysics should have mathematical thinking, otherwise they get carried away.
  • A servant must know the purpose, the instructions of the master. If one knows master's purpose, the service will be auspicious for everyone.
  • We as servants must know the purpose of Srila Rupa Goswami, Srila Prabhupada and our spiritual master.
  • We are representing Krishna therefore we should know His instructions well and speak what the Lord wants, so as not to be embarrassed.
  • We dress properly because we represent Krishna, we speak properly because we represent Krishna, not for our own prestige, and we don't change the philosophy, so as not to be embarrassed.
  • If people are into issues better give more specific answers. If nobody asks anything, bringing up an issue may stir up some questions.
  • Krishna-samhita - a book for madhyamas on preaching techniques.
  • Vishnudutas are inquiring about the basic principle of authority, criteria to be judged.
  • Here philosophy is using the story as the medium.
  • Only a sample is taken of what Ananta Sesha talks about all day.
  • Philosophy (tattva) itself is dharma, the rules are just there to express and measure that dharma.
  • The secondary on itself is not the dharma, so people tend to throw it out, or accept it without primary. But tattva is primary, and rules are there to express it.
  • Dealing in relationships - we worry about our side, about our duty.
  • Punishment is there for those who are not following dharma.
  • Yamadutas are actually only dealing with the secondary. They say Ajamila has not followed the rules, but he has followed the tattva.
  • Rig Veda is the basis for all others. All the Vedas expand from Rks.
3rd May 2016 Lecture 2
  • Yamadutas explained what they knew according to authority.
  • Griha-sutras - things done within the house.
  • Dharma-sutras - social things.
  • The person speaking, preaching, they have something they base their preaching on - that should be discussed, taken through, just as in the discussion between Yamadutas and Vishnudutas.
  • All other sampradayas can get their conclusion from our sampradaya.
  • Everybody is situated in the Lord's system, but people who don't follow dharma just take parts they like - like children only pick and eat certain things, while adults appreciate a wholesome meal.
  • Those not following Vedas are still able to arrange things, just like animals have skills to maintain their existence.
  • The animals REALLY feel like doing certain things.
  • Madhvacarya speaks very clearly, in very straightforward, simple language.
  • Ramanuja had Vedanta-sutra, Pancaratra and the songs of the Alwars. In that sense, we are very close to the Sris.
  • Dvijas always go to Gurukula, others learn through public programs, kirtana, prasada etc.
  • Vedanta-sutra is already included in the Bhagavatam.
  • We should not be enamored by those following or not following the Vedas - only Vaishnavas actually know the Vedas.
  • We are actually being seen in how we are seeing things.
  • Intellect, IQ, is something one might have by the modes, but it does not mean that one uses it intelligently.
  • Doing someone else's work is wrong because the skill and the mood will not match.
  • Varna is only there for 1/4th of people, grihasthas.
  • A devotee is never alone because the Lord is involved everywhere. Supersoul is not taking us to any place where he is not going.
  • When Vaishnava is stable, there is no fear.
  • Everybody is acting under modes, so everyone is inevitably doing something wrong. Therefore Jaimini is wrong in that in order to be happy one should simply continue proper work.
  • Non-human beings manufacture their own systems.
  • Yamadutas can see the workings of karma.
  • Yamaraja can always consult with the Supersoul regarding what should be done.
  • Materialist who do not follow the Vedas are COMPLETELY in ignorance. We should not neglect to give them full credit.
  • Regression meditation - anything can walk into their mind.
  • It gives a sense of control - 'I can regress someone' rather than 'I accept authority and advice someone based on that.'
  • Bhagavan has come as the scripture.
  • Actually Srila Prabhupada said that by studying this life one can understand past and future lives.
  • Brahma is the most pious living entity, since the only since he has done is not remembering Krishna.
  • Anything great happening in the nondevotee society is remnants from following the Vedic culture.
  • If one born among nondevotees comes up to devotion very quickly, it means birth in nondevotee society was due to mental offenses.
3rd May 2016 Lecture 3
  • There are different numbers of material elements given in the scripture, but the mind is always one of them.
  • Kapila Muni has described 24.
  • The main point of the material subtle body is insurmountable material desire - the theme changes, but not the desire itself.
  • Recently acquired desires go quickly. Deeper desires are also being removed by devotional service, but the process is slower.
  • By our own determination we may elevate ourself within the matter, but we will not get out of her influence.
  • Living being is born with his own karma, consciousness, combination of modes.
  • Our guna is also due to previous karma, but at every moment we are free to act with a different identity.
  • Minor adjustments in our lives take 2 weeks to get used to.
  • Extremes - 4 months.
  • Total emotional changes - 2 years.
  • Someone may look like a shudra in the beginning, but it may also be a covered higher nature. But in any case one has to act according to one's present position. If more purified aspects appear, we work with that.
  • Varna element is how somebody will be engaged. Ashrama is how one situates oneself.
  • The soul has the nature to serve, but they don't understand that altruism, socialism etc is not actual service.
  • One should take to one's natural position in the service of the Lord. We have a conditioning, but we should not be carried away by it.
  • What is the quality of our offering? It should not be 'I have the right to offer this to Krishna.' We should not try to change everything and everyone due to our own preferences.
  • We can't pick and choose what we like in the Vedic.
  • The previous fruitive activities actually fulfill our desires, but it depends when they fructify.
  • The gross body is determined by how we function as subtle body.
  • In the spiritual world bodies are expansions of the soul.
v.56-68

  • The good qualities mentioned should especially be present in brahmanas.
  • Ajamila was nicely situated in brahminical duties, but not necessarily in devotional service.
  • The upper part of the body is the first face of Cupid, the lower part - the second face.
  • Bhakti in early stages is much more powerful than karma and jnana in the advanced stages.
  • The conjugal rasa produced all others.
  • The most powerful attractions on the material platform can be overcome by chanting the holy name.
6.1.13-14
  • Pious acts burn the reactions but do not destroy the roots.
  • Devotional service gets rid of the weed creeper and its root.
  • To whatever degree devotional service is adopted, the weeds are uprooted.
6.1.40.
  • Devotee follows the Vedas because it pleases the Lord.
