Reading from Śrīmad Bhāgavatam Study Guide (Canto 5 Chapter 5): 'In the following 4 verses Lord Ṛṣabhadeva tells His sons how they can become free from the false identification arising from false ego and material conditional life. 'Oh, my sons! You should accept the highly elevated Paramahaṁsa, a spiritually advanced spiritual master. In this way you should place your faith and love in Me, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.' '
His Holiness Bhaktividyā Pūrṇa Svāmī Mahārāja: So by accepting the spiritual master then that's how the faith is put in Kṛṣṇa. Because how do we know Kṛṣṇa? We don't know Kṛṣṇa. We know Kṛṣṇa through the devotees. So then for us in this system... Because here, if you just go by the standard, you just find the advanced spiritual master, and then there is a Paramparā there and everything like that. But when you are working within the Kali-yuga, you are working within the Ācārya system, where there is a Founder-Ācārya. So that person is the Paramahaṁsa because they know perfectly what to do in this age. Say what people want to say, but they know what to do. And knowing what to do then everybody else follows them. That's what it means, before we came across, 'relevant instruction.' Relevant instruction means, the Ācārya said this, so we give relevant instruction how to understand what the Ācārya said. Right? We don't change.
Prabhu (1): Although Ṛṣabhadeva, He is already acting as a spiritual master before his sons, still He tells them to accept the spiritual master.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: To accept the spiritual master, yeah. And then it will be about their relationship with Him as the Supreme Lord. [Laughter] Yeah. Just like Kṛṣṇa in Gītā, He is with Arjuna, He is the spiritual master, but He is also the goal. So some individuals you'll get like that. Just like you say, Prabhupāda's disciples, he is the spiritual master and he is the Founder-Ācārya. And so then for the next generation, then they have their spiritual master and Prabhupāda as the Founder-Ācārya. It just happens to go there. But the position of Prabhupāda as the Founder, that's the unique. He happens to also be spiritual master for his disciples.
Prabhu (1): But this is primary, this is secondary?
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yes. But the main thing is that there is Founder-Ācārya. Otherwise if that's not understood, one actually does not understand Prabhupāda. It's just like, let's say, if we take Ramanuja, Madhvācārya, Nimbarka and Viṣṇusvāmī. If we didn't understand their position of Founder-Ācārya, would we actually understand them? We would just say they are a guru, then we don't understand the point. So Prabhupāda is the same. So he is the Founder in our line. Because we have 6 schools of Vedānta, so that's 4, Śankara is the 5th and Prabhupāda is the 6th. Do you understand? So each school of Vedānta has their founder in Kali-yuga. Other ages, they don't do that, you don't need to. But in Kali-yuga then it's always run like that, it's always run as an institution. Because we have such bad habits then we need something to...
Prabhu (2): That's why we hate the institution.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yeah, that's why we don't like it because it makes us to... It impinges on our natural animalness.
Prabhu (2): Whimsicalness. [Laughter]
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yes.
Prabhu (2): Mleccha-ness. [Laughter]
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yes.
Mātājī (1): Mahārāja, which school did Prabhupāda have?
HH BVPS Mahārāja: The acintya-bhedābheda-tattva.
Mātājī (1): That's not Lord Caitanya?
HH BVPS Mahārāja: No, He is God. [Laughter] No, see this is the thing. Because everyone will say, 'No, what about Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura?' So, you know, it's like that. But then, 'No, but what about Gaurakiśora Dāsa Bābājī, what about Bhaktiviṇoda Ṭhākura, what about Brahmā?' It's not understood is that it's a position where one of the devotees comes, establishes the institution, so they set up the formulas that everybody can use. Whether you understand them or not, they work. Right? So they come and do that. Because the point is you can say it's Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura. And it's not that... By saying someone is the Founder-Ācārya it doesn't mean that everybody else is a schnook. [Laughter] Like when we quote... Hope I get this right. When we quote about thinking of sex life and spitting, that's Yamunācārya?
Prabhus: Yes.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: He was Rāmānuja's guru. So he is one of the Ālvārs, they are all eternal associates of the Lord. But Rāmānuja is the Founder-Ācārya. So the point is is would we all be able to sit down in a math all day and chant 64 rounds? No. Prabhupāda already tried that. Right? So, and let us just say, in the Gaudīya mission, then those who follow what Prabhupāda did in preaching around the world are successful in doing whatever they are doing. No exceptions. But if they just follow and just do what they thought Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura was doing, then there is a little temple there that no one is going to that they are ringing bells and they are basically getting by. People may object to this or not, but it doesn't matter because people from the Gaudīya Math that are thoughtful, they say exactly this is the way. And I am not talking about just a guy, I am talking about the Ācārya of the maths. Because if you look at it, as soon as they introduce Prabhupāda's disciples into these maths, then they go all over the word. When it was just the local Bengali brahmacharis then they never got out of their village, and I am not exaggerating here. Does that make sense? But we can say that, we have grown up with them, we have been living here since the 1970s long before any of these groups were even there. So we've known the maths, we've watched the maths. You know what I am saying?
So that's the point. It's not that there is a difference in spiritual advancement. It's taken, 'Oh, no, that's the most spiritually advanced.' No, that's the one who has been given the mandate to create the institution that everybody can follow, and therefore go back to Godhead. That's what the Founder-Ācārya does. So it doesn't make him more advanced than his guru and the previous Ācāryas. Because that's why they are saying, 'Why not Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura?' Then we'll skip to Rūpa Gosvāmī. 'What about Lord Caitanya? What about Brahmā?' It's always, you know... No, it's just that's their duty. If someone says, 'Set up the festival,' and all that, does that mean he is more advanced than the temple president who told him to do it? Does that make sense? That's the whole thing. Founder-Ācārya is still not actually understood. Now they've made a book about it. Because it's like they made a book about it when? Last year it came out? Year before? Two years ago? We've been mentioning it since 1984 about how important it is.
Mātājī (1): We should have done a book...
HH BVPS Mahārāja: We made papers but they got filed away out the window square. [Laughter]
Prabhu (2): Is it because we look at it as a social position? Ācārya?
HH BVPS Mahārāja: That's how we look at everything. It's just like this. I mean, how you say? Like the perfection back in the 1980s was if you were a sannyāsī, you were a guru and you were a GBC - it just didn't get better than that, you know. [Laughter] It's all looking at it as a social position - who has got the power, who has got the money, who has got the influence - rather than looking at it as the natural things, what are the duties? And because of that it makes a problem. You know what I am saying? So you can get into that, that's a whole another discussion, but that's not what we are supposed to get into here.
But the point here is that that elevated Paramahaṁsa for us - that's Prabhupāda. We surrender to Prabhupāda. Then we want to make a connection with that Paramahaṁsa, we follow therefore a guru who will make it very clear about Prabhupāda's position and Prabhupāda's instructions. Because you can't adjust or change, or do anything with this. One is Paramparā you can't change, but, two, you can't change it because the Founder, he has already worked it out. Because when it was asked from Prabhupāda, now that he has been through... I am not sure what year it was, ISKCON has gone and been established and developed, so this would have been in the 1970s, so when asked, 'Would you have done anything different from now what's being done?' He said, 'Not one thing.' Like that. So it's just that was what was required.
Prabhu (2): And he always knew what to do.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Always knew what to do. Because he is liberated, he is... It's like this idea, 'Oh, he is from the spiritual world, what does he know of the material world? This is our block,' you know, 'we are the goodies here.' [Laughter]
Prabhu (2): Those ones happened when he wanted to take ISKCON outside of the Bowery to the West Side.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yeah, how can it go anywhere but here? It was developing in San Francisco, that was a freakout, 'How is that possible?' But one person from there went and just said what Prabhupāda said. When Prabhupāda arrived in San Francisco, he didn't have shaved up... He had a bunch of long-haired hippies there. But what were they talking about? 'Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Lord. We are not the body, we are the soul. Developing love for Kṛṣṇa is the ultimate goal. We are going to do that by chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa.' Perfection of sambandha, abhidheya and prayojana. And they could say that in a nutshell. But you probably go up to devotees now and say, 'What's the essence of our philosophy?' You may not get such a clear answer. So just by the association... I think it was Mukunda. He went out there and by that when Prabhupāda arrived there were 50 devotees, right? I don't know if there were 50 devotees in 26 Second Avenue.
Prabhu (1): Not at that time.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yes. So, I think it had been more, I think then they moved up to I think to 56 Second Avenue because they had more devotees. But the point is is, like that, that's the effect, because they followed the Founder. That's the point, it works. And there, even Prabhupāda... It's like development and all that, but they understood the philosophy, the clarity, like that. The practices weren't so clear because now and again when they would have class and not everyone was there then Prabhupāda walked around the corner of the doughnut shop and then stopped and, 'Okay, let's go!' [Laughter] You know, so it was. Like that. I can't remember, there was something just below the 56 Second Avenue, I think... I am not sure what that was, but I think devotees used to frequent that place also, some kind-of eats or something...
Mātājī (1): I think it was the macrobiotics, some kind of a Western macrobiotic...
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yeah, some kind of restaurant, they would go down and hang out there, you know, to preach...
Prabhu (2): Yes. [Laughter]
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yeah, it probably worked for preaching, at the same time they didn't mind the food. [Laughter] You know, it was fun. So that's the thing is, the Founder sets it, if you follow it it works. If that's understood then the position of the Founder, relationship with your own spiritual master, relationship with other spiritual masters becomes very clear, simple, easy. Then, what's the effect? One can be fixed in your faith and love in the Supreme Personality of Godhead, because that's what one is trying to establish. Yes?
Mātājī (2): Some ISKCON devotees say that there are some, also after Prabhupāda, there are some ISKCON gurus who came directly from the spiritual world...
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Who cares if they came directly from the spiritual world?
Mātājī (2): ...and unless you listen to them then you don't understand what Prabhupāda says, unless you take śikṣā from those particular gurus, then you don't understand what Prabhupāda says.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yes, ehm... What you call it? One has to remember, these kind of tricks have been used in India since time immemorial. They may work outside of India like a charm. They work in India like a charm, but those who have been here, these are just standard tricks.
Like I told you, there is one guy, they were super wealthy family, I mean like Limburger cheese wealthy family, that stinky, then they were silk merchants and they had, I forgot, at the time, something like crores of rupees, millions in silk at a fair in New York, and the fair caught on fire and burnt down, it was some kind of a fabric fair, so all their stock was there. So now, here it a bit reduces your kind-of capital position. So they weren't that wealthy. And this, the son of the family was interested in ISKCON, he popped by now and again, like I would see him in Mayapur regularly, you know he would come down for the festivals and stuff like that, they were just up the river I think two hours by train or something, you know, going to Kolkata, they stemmed from there. And they were like that for a long time. And then I think once they got established and he got the business going more and it was more like, now there is more benefit to be gained, then one day some Indian sadhu shows up at the door, and he asks, you know... He comes and says, 'Now you are ready...' 'Now you are ready?' 'Yes, before you were not ready...' 'I was not ready?' 'No, but now you are ready...' You know, and so then, 'Wow, and what's this? Ohh, yeah, uhh, cool...' Like that. So he ended up becoming initiated by that guru, you know, just some local North Indian sādhu. They know all the tricks. 'Prabhupāda has only given this much,' and 'He has given the basics, we are giving the higher, the rāgānuga,' like that. It's just everybody tries it. You know what I am saying?
So that's the point, whoever says this does not know what a Founder-Ācārya is. Not in any way, not in any shape or any form. The point is is, so what if they come from spiritual world? Does that mean before Prabhupāda no one came from the spiritual world? You know what I am saying? The point is is it's a position, who does that? That's the thing. It's there, it's for the length of the mission. Prabhupāda said 10,000 years, so he is the Founder for 10,000 years. Everybody else comes and does it. Even in Rāmānuja's line then... I think... It's Vajra? No, Vādiraja, it's 7 generations down from Rāmanuja. So after 7 generations things were... Devotees were a bit confused, so he comes to establish very clearly what Rāmānuja said. He is from the spiritual world, but it's all about Rāmānuja. That's a disciple. This thing, 'Well, he is there and he is from the spiritual world, so you don't need Prabhupāda,' these are... Like that... In other words, we will leave it at that because otherwise I can get really really nasty about this topic, I mean like really nasty. [Laugher] Because the point is is they don't understand what they are talking about. They are just playing with it like a game, just playing with it like a game.
Like Prabhupāda. What happened to the sannyāsīs, the 4 famous sannyāsīs, or infamous sannyāsīs in 1970. who decided that Prabhupāda was God, and that's why Prabhupāda had gone off to India and stuff like that? No, he just goes off to India because he is trying to start something up there. But, 'Oh, no, Prabhupāda doesn't like,' this that. Satsvarūpa was the only one who had read the books, so he could actually argue with them, right? But they've taken sannyāsa from Prabhupāda, they are behaving in their own way, creating their own philosophy, Prabhupāda just said, 'You leave ISKCON.' Did he take away sannyāsa? No, that's not something you play with. Just like, let's say if the temple president really messes up and he is a gṛhastha, do we take away his gṛhastha?
Mātājī (1): Maybe he would be happy.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: He might be. [Laughter] Like that. Do you understand? You don't do those things. Prabhupāda doesn't play with these things, we do those things. The point is is, there is an establishment, there is a culture, we don't do those things. So the Founder-Ācārya means something, and that's just the way it is. And it doesn't matter if they come from the spiritual world, they come out from under a rock, Prabhupāda is the Founder-Ācārya, and that's how it works in all the sampradāyas. Like Vallabha is there, but it's still the Viṣṇusvāmī's sampradāya. Isn't it? Viṣṇusvāmi is it, or the Nimbārka? It's still the Viṣṇusvāmī's sampradāya. Let us say, Sanātana Gosvāmī, Rūpa Gosvāmī, Jīva Gosvāmī, Viśvanātha, Baladeva, Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, Prabhupāda - they have all written commentaries on the Bhāgavatam. But when in scholarly circles you say 'The Commentator' who does is mean? It means Śrīdhara Svāmī. And how many thousand of years ago is he? It's like two and a half, or something like that, goes back. So nothing goes, so when Vallabhācārya says, 'I have written a better commentary,' then Lord Caitanya did not appreciate that. It's not that he is not accepted as a leading personality in the sampradāyas, but that mentality wasn't appreciated. 'Oh, you don't have to listen to the Ācārya any more because...' It's already been said. We are thinking we are coming over something new. It's like, we have to remember, India has been at the spiritual stuff for the last 151 trillion years, so they got their lines down, the others only figured this out more recently. Does that make sense? Yeah. So this kind of stuff we don't... We don't brook at all.
Prabhu (2): What about those who distinguish between the disciples of Prabhupāda, that some of them are from the spiritual world, so they we can, but the other...
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Who cares? It's about Prabhupāda's instructions. It's not that it changes. They may be able to give more insight and more clarity and all that, but it's still going to be according to do you relate to them and their nature? It's still going to be sva-jāti. They may have a wider range of sva-jāti, but it doesn't matter, it's still sva-jāti. It's not... That's not the point.
Prabhu (2): But if they have that wider range there is no need to say stuff like that.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: No. Because who is saying it? Someone who is on a narrower range.
Prabhu (2): Yes. Exactly that's indicative of...
HH BVPS Mahārāja: The whole point is is the neophytes, they create these difficulties.
Prabhu (2): Yes. That's the problem.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: For the madhyamas that doesn't matter. It's just like, let us say, you have a preparation you like. Let's say there is a fancier preparation, more expensive, more opulent, more rare, but you like this other one. Does it matter?
Prabhu (1): No.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Is it now you have to take this one because it's more expensive?
Prabhu (2): No.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Because the point is is, as pointed out, as also these points are made in Kṛṣṇa-bhajanāmṣta by Narahari Cakravartī, Kṛṣṇa-bhajanāmṛta, it's one of the sampradāyic books. So he discusses these points, that the neophyte says this, why? Because the neophyte, it's about themselves, and so why is their spiritual master important, why is he special? 'Because he is connected to me. I am special, therefore whatever is mine is special.' If they weren't... If that same person had accepted a different guru as a spiritual master they'd be saying the same thing about them.
Mātājī (1): So they are steady.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yeah, that's, they're steady, they are steady in their neophyteness, yeah. Fixed. So that's the whole point is, these things aren't... You don't hear... Do you hear Caitanya Caritāmṛta talking about that?
Prabhu (2): No.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: And he mentions, at that time there were hundreds and hundreds, there were thousands of gurus, and this thing of gurus falling down, he said hundreds were falling down. And he is just, you know... Like... I am not sure, but same time frame as Lord Caitanya. But does anybody talk about it, does anybody care? No. We are the one, because of grāmya-kathā that we make it important.
Prabhu (2): Also because of Facebook.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: That's there it's just another, it's just another medium, just a better medium.
Prabhu (2): It gets around more.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yeah. Prabhupāda didn't want devotees using teletypes. Like that.
Prabhu (2): No, actually. Because it would be used for prajalpa.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yeah, they would use it for prajalpa, and how difficult that is? If you have seen one of those little ticker tapes, like those... And you are reading...
Mātājī (1): And no pictures.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yeah, no pictures... [Laughter] So like that, it's just that's what it would be. And it's a lot of work, and a big machine, have you seen them? Like big, yeah, very expensive. We only saw them in... Basically only radio stations and media has those. So Prabhupāda didn't want devotees using it, because they would say 'We'll set up teletypes in all the temples and that way then we can communicate without all the phone bills and this and that.' And he [Prabhupāda] said, 'No, you would just talk prajalpa.' So... So if you can use it for preaching, great. But it's like how many are actually successfully using it for preaching? There are devotees who are, but a lot of devotees it's not exactly that, it's what the latest picture that's up? You know what I am saying?
So the point is is the Founder-Ācārya is the one who establishes the standards, he gives the vision, he shows how to do it, then it's a matter of applying it. You know, it's just like, let's say one is learning cooking. Now, in cooking then there are certain techniques that are there. There aren't more techniques. You know what I am saying? It's not that the, let's say the French cook knows different techniques than the Indian cook who knows different techniques than the Chinese cook who knows different techniques than the Mexican cook. Cooking is the same thing, it's their application that may come out different. So this idea that 'Oh, Prabhupāda has given some stuff and we need more,' that means you don't even understand what Prabhupāda gave, you don't understand the subject matter. He has given all the points, just like what we were saying here, if you notice it's in 3rd canto, it's in Bhagavad-gītā, it's always the same thing. The formulas are always the same, it's just more and more developed, more and more sophisticated. That's all, it does not change anything. 'Oh, we have to see differently, it's a different time, we have to do different things than that.' So it's like let's say we are in Russia, okay, it's communist rule, do people eat, sleep, mate and defend?
Prabhu (2): Yes.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Ok, let's say there is glasnost. Do they eat, sleep, mate and defend?
Mātājī (1): More.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: More. [Laughter] More eating, more sleeping, more mating and defending? So that means, the principles stay the same. So that's it, it doesn't matter. This idea that, 'Oh, no, it's all about this,' that's, that's the neophyte, they think the secondary is the substance. The secondary connected to Kṛṣṇa has substance, but it's not the substance. We say it becomes Kṛṣṇa-ized. We didn't say it's Kṛṣṇa. That's the point. Yes?
Prabhu (1): Mahārāja, in terms of sambandha, abhidheya and prayojana, how can we place the Founder-Ācārya, the dīkṣā and the śikṣā gurus?
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Well, they are... Means, the Founder shows how to approach and understand what Sanātana Gosvami is saying, what Rūpa Gosvāmī is saying, what Raghunātha Dāsa...
Prabhu (1): So he is in prayojana?
HH BVPS Mahārāja: You could say, but he gives the clear picture on all of them. So he gives the sambandha of all, he gives the abhidheya of all, he gives the clarity. Because otherwise they have given the work, but how to approach that, that's here, so, yeah, you could say like that. But at the same time it's not that she is just one of the three. He is the one that sambandha and abhidheya and prayojana are... You are going to understand it through him.
Prabhu (1): Yes.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: So now he is going to clearly represent what Rūpa, Sanātana and Raghunātha are saying. That's going to be exact, because how can he lead if he is not following? But he is showing us exactly how we can understand what Rūpa Gosvāmi is saying. Like that. So it's not that he is just one of the three. Because he is the śikṣā guru on which it is based, he does establish how the abhidheya is performed, he gives us the clarity on the goal, like that. So they are all doing that, but it's all... Does that make sense? So you could say is we have Sanātana Gosvāmī, he is the dīkṣā Guru, Rūpa is the śikṣā guru, and you could say the śikṣā is in connection with Raghunātha, just that the mood and all that, that surrender and everything like that. But then Prabhupāda is showing us how to approach that. We can approach the previous Ācārya through Prabhupāda. That's from Rūpa Gosvāmī. You approach the previous Ācāryas through your Ācārya, so our Ācārya is Prabhupāda. Then there is the relevant instruction to understand what the Founder has given us. And saying that someone has come from the spiritual world, so that negates Prabhupāda, or that we don't have to follow - that's not relevant instruction. That's just ... That's what you call śrama eva hi kevalam.
Prabhu (3): Mahārāja, what kind of mood do we carry towards such people?
HH BVPS Mahārāja: We just avoid them, that's all. We don't, we just... It's just like we don't bother. As long as they don't get into our face then we don't bother, but if they get up into our grill then, you know, Prabhupāda says, kick on their face. And we are happy to do it. Or if you check then there is defenestration, there is all kinds of nice things. [Laughter] So in other words, it's just not tolerated at all. Otherwise, they are not actually sampradāyic. It's the utsāha-mayī to the extreme. Do you understand? Yeah? So it's just a beginning anartha, it's not even an advanced anartha.
Prabhu (4): Is it that in Kali-yuga there is a need for founder-Ācāryas because of...
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yes, you have to.
Prabhu (4): ...because people are so lost?
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yeah, because people just don't know what to do, you are always changing. Because in the other ages they all follow the Vedic culture. In this age they tend to not follow it. Duryodhana is not God conscious, and because of that he is very attached. But other than his dislike of the Pandavas he does his all his other kṣatriya duties and that perfectly. Do we see that he imprisons his father? No. So, his father says something, he doesn't like it but he does it. But it doesn't mean he is not going to try the next day to go in and convince him otherwise. Because he plays on his attachment, so that's there. They follow the Vedic culture, so therefore what you are going to do, the lifestyle, everything is going to be the same, but we are only following this lifestyle, which is Vedic, because Prabhupāda said. Otherwise it is not our preferred lifestyle, and even that we try to avoid it because, 'Oh, it doesn't matter,' we separate it from Prabhupāda's instructions, so it's just, 'Oh, it's Vedic, so we don't have to follow.' Prabhupāda was the one who... Did we even know the word 'Vedic' before we met devotees?
Prabhu (4): Not me.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Right? Did we hear about all these different things that Prabhupāda talks about? No. And so, we get it from Prabhupāda and then we say, 'Oh, it doesn't matter.'
Prabhu (2): So we didn't get it.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yeah, so we didn't get it. So we have to learn from the Founder what it means by 'We chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, we don't care for the rules.' Because the point is is all the rules that we don't care about Prabhupāda has already removed. [Laughter] So what's left is what he expects us to follow. And then we apply that on what Prabhupāda gave, is you remove all the rules Prabhupāda gave. And then what are they going to do? They are going to replace it with their own rules.
Just like if it doesn't matter what you wear, okay, you wear your pants and shirt, great. But why is it when someone shows up in a dhoti then the guy who is wearing pants and shirt who says, 'Oh, it doesn't matter what you wear,' is criticizing? 'Oh, that's artificial. Oh, we are not from India. Oh, we are...' They don't even follow their own philosophy.
Prabhu (2): There is a special hell for that.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yeah, there is, actually. You have a philosophy and you don't follow it, there is reaction. Even though your philosophy is bogus, you know, you'll get punished for not following your own bogus philosophy.
Prabhu (5): Extra bonus.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Extra bonus, yes, you go to the standard hell, plus you go to this hell.
Prabhu (2): Wait, there is more.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: [Laughter] There is more. Yes. Ok.
Prabhu (6): Our understanding of Śrīla Prabhupāda's standards, to what degree it should be based on his books or on his example from his life?
HH BVPS Mahārāja: But his life is how he applies it. So it's based on the books. So you have to see what he writes in his letters, what he uses in conversations, what he does in the practical example compared on the books. The books are the basis. Right? Books are the basis, preaching is the essence, utility is the principle, purity is the force. And it goes in that order, you change the order, it changes what it means.
Prabhu (6): So we should read also Prabhupāda-līlāmṛta, his letters, to get full picture...
HH BVPS Mahārāja: No, it's that you understand the books and associate with those, and if you can do that also then that's there. But the point is is, you have to see these other things in relationship to what the book says. So if it appears contradictory, take the book and work back to the letter or to the conversation. Don't take the conversation and leave the book. The books are the law books, Prabhupāda said. So if you can't see where they connect, leave it. Just take what the book says. And as one gets purified and more mature and by the association and hearing from others, then one can see how the two are not contradictory.
Prabhu (6): Now we see that there is no unity among senior devotees...
HH BVPS Mahārāja: No, no... But where is this going? Is this something here about developing that relationship or it's just fun to talk about these things and we have touched the topic. Do you understand? Because we don't want to do that. Is it relevant to this?
Prabhu (6): I just wanted to ask... Do you think in the future...
HH BVPS Mahārāja: No, I am asking, is it relevant? I know you just wanted to ask, but is it relevant? If it's relevant, ask.
Prabhu (6): It's regarding Founder-Ācārya.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Okay.
Prabhu (6): In the future, will there be more clarity and more unity?
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Yes, of course. Of course. Because...
Prabhu (6): And no issues like now?
HH BVPS Mahārāja: There will always be because it's Kali-yuga. You have to remember, it goes up and it goes down. Then the state that the society is in now, this is 50 years in. So let's say the 10,000 years, it's 9950 years into the movement, so it will be at this state. But at this state it will fall apart until after 50 years it's zero. But because now we are going into it, these are just obstacles to get in the way of it developing and creating the Golden Age. Do you understand? So that's why one doesn't have to worry that it will fall apart. Lord Caitanya will... It won't happen. But it doesn't mean that there is not encouragement. Like we said, Vādirāja came along after 7 generations, like that. That's people who are following Vedic culture. We may require something a little sooner. [Laughter] Does that make sense? Yeah.
So we have to understand it's that it's the first generation only that has the real problem. 2nd generation, Kṛṣṇa consciousness is their culture, whether they want to follow it or not, that's another thing, but it's their culture. Just like that, you get basically in general, it's generic, any gurukuli, or any second generation from any country of the world if they can all get together and have a program and they do the same program, prasāda, kīrtana, sit around and talk prajalpa and check out each other's tattoos and, you know, stuff like that. It's the same, but you cannot do that with 1st generation.
Mātājī (1): Tattoos are different.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Eh?
Mātājī (1): Tattoos are very different.
HH BVPS Mahārāja: Very different tattoos. [Laughter] I think 1st generation goes more for the Japanese and colored ones and all that kind-of thing. Do you understand? So the thing is is, already there is a culture whether they want to follow it or not. Prabhupāda talked about the 3rd. So then? So the point is is 1st generation is the one that has a problem of following the culture, what Prabhupāda gave, 2nd doesn't. It's whether they want to be serious or not. They want to be serious, they just do it. And if they don't then what do they do? Basically, Kṛṣṇa conscious, just throw in some slack in a few of the regulative principles. But otherwise it's not like a totally different lifestyle, you know what I am saying? That's the point. So it will naturally develop and then when you have those, when you have a nice core of those who understand Prabhupāda's instructions or follow it, then when first generation joins... Because there will always be 1st generation, then they will have a good example to follow, it will be very easy for them. But for now, what Prabhupāda talks about in his books on culture many haven't seen, they don't even know it exists. But when people are following and doing it, then they will have an example, then it's, 'Oh, okay.' And then they'll ask about it and with practice they will get good at it. Does that make sense? So you don't have to worry about it.
