SB 6.5 NARADA MUNI CURSED BY PRAJAPATI DAKSHA
13th May 2016 Lecture 1
  •  Detachment from the material world cannot take place unless one comes in contact with devotees of parampara. Without such contact, one cannot even consider giving up desires here.
  • The soul is as brilliant as the sun, even being so small. When we realize its potential there is nothing much here at all.
  • We cannot experience other than with Krishna.
  • In Brahman we experience our own happiness, but it is static, so it can never satisfy the soul.
  • In the spiritual world we are doing something positive, but in the material world we are just removing the problem. It never actually gets to the positive because everything here is a problem for jiva. We only project our ideas and think that certain activities are happiness.
  • The demoniac mentality is put ourself in a dangerous condition, then get out and then call it happiness. We create our own pain, then remove it and then call it happiness.
  • Tatastha is the state of the jiva, but jiva is part of the internal potency. We are not independent of the internal potency, just as She is not independent of Krishna. Even in the material world we are fully dependent upon Krishna.
  • Being in the spiritual world is unlimited times greater than the tatastha position.
  • Happiness in the spiritual world is unlimited; all relationships between devotees and Krishna and their love of each other nourish each other and it's ever increasing, so it is undescribable.
  • Originally we receive some mercy of devotees who even introduce us to the spiritual life. Devotees make our fortune.
  • We should associate with those devotees who are eager to advance.
  • There is no question of actually being renounced because in every position we are trying to be happy.
  • The living entity is not naturally detached at all. The real renunciation is giving up material world and moving on to spiritual world. In the spiritual world moving from one thing to another is not a problem because everything is connected to Krishna and everything is eternal.
  • Grihasthas not being able to make their marriage work is so much more devastating than sannyasis falling down.
  • If we are dying for a reason to leave Krishna consciousness we re so upset with sannyasis leaving because then we can have no authority.
  • Everybody in the Vedic system is supposed to be a sannyasi by mentality.
  • Sannyasa without devotional service is not allowed because people in this age are not materially qualified. In other ages they were.
  • Obstacles are always there in the material world, but devotional service offers opportunity to get through obstacles.
  • If we are not interested in pure devotional service we get distracted by so many things.
  • Everyone is supposed to become renounced anyway, if somebody can do it early, it should be encouraged.
  • The 1st generation gives more credit to themselves than they should. They have not had brahmachari training, they try, they may fail, but then at least they will be better grihasthas.
  • Centralization and bureaucracy kill the individual enthusiastic spirit.

v. 1-9

  • Haryashvas were already inclined to renunciation and paramahamsa stage.
  •  Narada Muni would not have dissuaded grihasthas from doing their duties.
  • If one has a nature to take sannyasa, one does. If not, one waits.
  • To perform fine austerities means that they have the right attitude and they are austere.
  • Narada Muni has the purity to see the purity of the Haryashvas, their inclination and their ability to renounce.
  • One can only come to the platform of purity by tasting the Lord's sweetness. For more purification we need to taste more sweetness.
  • Devotees endeavoring to be popular means they are missing the point of our acaryas. Narada Muni's or Prahlada Maharaja's instructions were not popular.
  • The real purpose is becoming the servant of the Lord.
  • Devotional service is actually the shelter, not our ashrama.
  • Father, mother and teacher should know the person's nature and guide them accordingly.
13th May 2016 Lecture 2
v. 10-20
  • Narada had to spend much time with Pracinabarhishat, but the Haryashvas caught his instructions immediately.
  • There is authority in tattva, but there is also a hierarchy in rasa.
  • If we question the authority of guru, we mess with the hierarchy of the whole system.
  • Daksha had engaged his sons in karma.
  • Bhajana-kriya destroys karma.
  • Daksha has faith in the Lord, but not in devotional service. So do many religions - one accepts some spiritual authority, but does not commit oneself to bhajana-kriya.
  • All world religions are preaching sub-dharma.
  • By following the laws of dharma one can get to Paramatma realization at best.
  • Shudras worry about fame. If people don't like them, they feel bad.
  • Even if we attract a crowd, only a few people will stay.
  • By karma Haryashvas had to beget children, but following Narada Muni they became delivered. We only have to follow Krishna's direction.
  • The reason to do duties is because it's God's law. Most people will continue with their duties.
  • Whatever is done in devotional service is never lost, but the point should be to come to full realization.
  • Ours is the movement of pure Vaishnavism.
  • Intelligence also takes on forms of things by contemplating them.
  • Intelligence connected to Krishna takes us back to Godhead.
  • Qualities we work hard for in the material world are just tools for devotional service.
  • Samanya vaishnavas do not have that firm determination to serve.
  • Actual independence is regaining our position as a spirit soul.
  • Actual intelligence will engage in Krishna consciousness.
  • A prostitute always acts whimsically.
  • The current of maya is quicker at the sides of the river - one cultivating austerity and knowledge develops more anger and ego.
  • To maintain our service in the changing situation is our austerity.
  • Having gotten knowledge from the Vedic literatures we have to apply it.
  • Citta is the polluted consciousness. The consciousness is offered to the Lord. We put the consciousness in the Lord and offer all elements to Him.
  • Vishnu is like a mirror, qualities are reflected from there.
  • Connected to Krishna everything is pure.
  • Choice is made by the ego.
  • Manasa brings in information from the senses.
  • Scientists are whimsical, they drop facts that are contrary to their theories.
  • There is only a thought that we can be happy in the material world.
  • If we use karma properly it will take us out of here.
13th May 2016 Lecture 3
  • A paramahamsa can extract the transcendental from all that's here. There are positive, negative and neutral activities.
  • The whole world has idealized Westerners, so if they become Krishna conscious, everyone will follow.
  • Time is always moving, things are changing, so we should consider what should we be doing.
  • In the spiritual world time does not give us trouble.
  • If we use time properly, it's working to our advantage.
  • Daksha has given his sons instructions - but how do they connect to the scripture?
  • Upanayanam is not spiritual initiation.
  • Vedic things only work if there is character.
  • Pancaratra requires preparation.
  • Father gives us our body, but the shastras are more respected, since they instruct the soul.
  • Ashrama is about what is the best situation for the soul.
  • When Krishna is pleased we get greater material results, but we should not do service for greater material results, otherwise it will be bhakti-mishra-karma.
  • Devotees use both pravrtti and nivrtti for nivrtti.
  • In the 2nd generation there is more respect for the parents because they are devotees.
  • Actually all scriptures advocate nivrtti-marga.
  • Devotees don't do anything unless it is connected to bhakti.
  • It's never recommended to just absorb oneself in one's day-to-day material life.
  • With father and mother there is a problem of possession, the teacher does not have that.
  • Relationship with spiritual master is newly formed and eternal.
  • The right choice is one, the wrong choice is always wrong, even in unlimited varieties.
v. 21-33
  •  Narada Muni does not have a problem with family life, but with not progressing in devotional service.
  • Hrisikesha is prayojana Deity.
  • There are 3 Tilaka marks for Vasudeva, 3 for Sankarshana, 3 for Pradyumna, 3 for Aniruddha.
  • The musical notes, Sama Veda, are for the glorification of the Lord (prayojana). Such activities are natural for Narada Muni.
  • We engage the religion in Krishna's service, but it's not about religion.
  • We use as much as necessary to keep ourselves engaged.
  • It is lamentable that Daksha took the events the wrong way.
  • If there is an opportunity to preach, we take it. If not, we just continue chanting ourselves.
  • Brahmacharya training is very important. The main point of culture is to go back to Godhead.
  • Modern education is not designed for cultural instruction, unless it is an alternative school.
  • Chanting Hare Krishna and following the 4 regulative principles is the basis, then we situate ourselves in varna and ashrama and keep ourselves busy - body, mind and words.
v. 34-44
  • Technically Narada Muni is going against karma-kanda, but there is no fault, since it is not the highest.
  • For Daksha there were inauspicious signs, even though his sons' renunciation was auspicious.
  • When the lips tremble, that's a sign of actual anger.
  • Narada went to Daksha because he thought that Daksha could be preached to while grieving for his sons.
16th May 2016 Lecture 1
  • Narada Muni was not considering the social position while approaching Daksha.
  • We should socially consider words we use, strength of speech etc, but it is not that we do not preach directly.
  • 'Circumstance' or 'patra' means us. Time and place is the situation. Otherwise, we take 'circumstance' as something impersonal.
  • Devotees nowadays are often not convinced, so people feel that they can get away with their wrong philosophy. But they could not do so with Prabhupada.
  • Gopis didn't care socially.
  • There is no situation that Krishna consciousness cannot be preached, it's just a question of whether we have the potency or not.
  • Uttama-adhikaris can't be defeated because they perfectly see time, place and circumstance.
  • The writings of Srila Jiva Goswami are so scholarly that they are even studied by other sampradayas. But it is not essential to be scholarly to present Krishna consciousness.
  • We have to drive the line between 'I cannot preach in this situation' and 'This situation cannot be preached in.' Otherwise the moment for preaching never comes.
  • The absolute truth works, and people can take it up, but it's a question of our ability. We should do our best. If the opportunity is not there, we wait.
  • When people are distressed they are open for alternative viewpoints.
  • In preaching we are not worried about our own position.
  • We have to give up this concept that we are special and center of the universe. Krishna will chip at it - as water wears away the stone.
  • Situation working means that we are Krishna conscious, not that materially it gets any better.
  • Husband and wife do not have to separate later in life, if the core of their relationship is Krishna consciousness.
  • Situation and relationship are two different things.
  • We should always look for opportunities to preach, even if that would take a long time.
  • For those on the path of karma-kanda everybody should be a grihastha.
  • Why Belgium maids are the best.
  • Renounced means to just do as much as needed to be done. It does not mean dry and restricted. 'If you only need one hotel, don't buy 2 of them'
  • Following the 4 regulative principles is actually renunciation.
  • Women may appreciate renunciation more than the men. Daksha's wife may be less upset than him.
  • Uttama-adhikari sees everyone as servant, but in their preaching they still look for those who are ready to identify and function in the position of servant.
  • Karmis may sometimes feel nicer than devotees - but that niceness is borrowed. Devotees are cleaning their heart and therefore impurities come out.
  • Sadhu means to cut, but it doesn't have to be a battle-ax, it can be neural brain surgery.
  • Philosophy will catch more the men, cultural and religious aspects - more the women.
  • In the Vedic system one can 'wear all the hats at once.'
  • When Daksha said 'next world', he still means within the material world.
  • By understanding the conclusions of the scripture one pays all the debts.
  • If one is going for liberation itself, one has to pay all the debts, but not if one is going for the real liberation.
16th May 2016 Lecture 2
  • There is no question of not upsetting anyone, since we even upset ourselves.
  • Devotees are accused, but still they should go on nicely explaining things.
  • We should not mixed devotional service the standard.
  • A woman should preach in her circle of influence. Women are more shy externally.
  • Men go outside of that.
  • Daksha's points are correct, but he does not know the conclusions of the shastra.
  • Full knowledge means Krishna consciousness.
  • Apara-vidya requires time to master, but Krishna consciousness can take us as little as a moment.
  • Daksha is on the slow path, and he does not understand how quickly devotional service may happen.
  • Only by the association of devotees one can actually become detached.
  • Vedic teachers put in 18 hours to educate the children.
  • Any karmic spirit of renunciation will be finished sooner or later.
  • Attachment is not actually to the things of the world, but to the spirit of control and enjoyment.
  • There is a natural built-in tolerance in the Vedic system.
  • Daksha is losing his family and security of home, so he curses Narada Muni with not being able to stay anywhere.
  • Activities that Daksha does are correct, but for him home is the center.
  • Women should preach in their circle of influence.
