  • Vanaprastha bathes 3 times a day.
  • Vanaprastha, contrary to grihastha brahmana, may live at the roots of trees.
  • Vanaprastha may have something, or not have anything. He may increase his austerities to the point of leaving the body, or maintain the body and travel as sannyasi.

  • Sannyasa ashrama.
  • Sannyasis will study the Vedas from the point of view of Upanishads.
  • When a man gives up emotional dependence of women, no one is any longer one's enemy, and nothing is an obstacle.
  • The social engagements, even if pious and connected to Krishna get tiresome after some time.
  • One should be absorbed in studying scriptures and preaching and be dependent on the Lord.
  • Sanyasa vow is taken to exclusively devote time to service of the Lord. Sanyasa means that the result is always for Krishna, and everyone should come to that platform.
  • One will feel alone until one is purified and perceives the Lord's presence always in one's heart.
  • Fearlessness means that one is always dependent on the Lord. However, one is not foolish.
  • One should only keep spiritual assets as a sannyasi. He should always live alone and be fearless
  • Alone means one is not in material company. For preaching one might be in a group, or one may also be alone. Grihasthas travel in groups of 4, sannyasi travels alone.
  • One should assimilate the essence of the Vedic knowledge - devotional service.
  • Brahmachari keeps the fire of his teacher; grihastha keeps his own fire; vanaprastha may continue to keep fire, but sannyasi does not.
  • Sannyasi does not have a dwelling.
  • Sannyasi is socially dead; grihastha is supposed to be socially alive.
  • As sannyasi should not desire to live or to die. In grihastha ashrama one does not bring up so much the instability of life - family members will not appreciate.
  • One should walk on road purified by sight - look at the road in front 12 feet to not step on anyone, since one has given a promise of safety to all created beings.
  • One's speech should always be truthful - Krishna conscious. One should keep one's heart pure. One should only perform activities that one's mind has ascertained to be pure.
  • The focus of the sannyasi is not being involved in anything in the material sphere, he is seeing everything in connection to the Lord. These points are also followed by brahmacharis, vanaprasthas and grihathas, but for sannyasi they are the main focus.
  • One should not utter speech devoid of truth - transcendence. Seven gates are either openings in the head, or 5 senses, mind and intellect. When 7 gates have perceived objects, one must deal with them according to truth - transcendence.
  • 36:50 'I have been around for 30 years' - but that is the body; soul has been around eternally.
  • Sannyasi should sit in proper postures.
  • Sannyasi should just preach philosophy. He should not deal in astrology and palmistry, give advice etc with the objective to obtain benefit.
  • One should not seek alms near a house where there are many brahmanas and mendicants - to not create inconvenience for others.
  • There are various ways how a sannyasi may collect alms - one chooses whatever works.
  • Sannyasi should clip his hair and nails, contrary to vanaprastha.
  • Some sampradayas sannyasis do not use any metals - even acamana cups are made of wood; waterpot is made of dried gourd or bamboo, clay etc
  • Biggest bamboo in the world grows between Kolkata and Burma. Sections of it maybe used as waterpots.
  • If one is not attached, one is going to get what one is supposed to anyway.
  • Sannyasis should go begging after lunch cooking and eating is finished, to avoid taking the portions of anybody else.
  • In Vedic culture everyone worries about their own duties. Otherwise, grihasthas demand that sannyasi be renounced, and sannyasi demands that grihasthas provide good facility.
  • One should not obtain alms by praising someone.
  • If senses are attracted by sensual objects, the sannyasi should restrain them by eating little and by sitting and standing in solitude.
  • A sannyasi should reflect on the sufferings of this world, separation from beloved ones and union with undesirable men, birth, death, old age and disease.
  • The order still works, even though one may not have ideal external markings of that order.
  • The 4 stages of sannyasa.
  • Kuticaka - one lives in a hut built by relatives and accepts alms from them. One remains fixed in spiritual sadhana.
  • Sannyasi maintains sikha and brahmana thread.
  • The designation of sannyasi does not make one into a sannyasi - it is by avoiding useless speech, useless activity and controlling life airs - sannyasa danda represents body, mind and words engaged in Krishna's service.
  • One should walk to avoid bothering other living entities, even though causing pain for oneself.
